Myson (whoisalmost2) hadpeanut butter ata friend’s house a couple ofweeks ago andwasfine (itwasn’t given tohim, hetook itfromanother child’s plate). Last week mydaughter andI wereeating somepeanuts andagain myson took some,I wasn’t overly worried ashe’d already hadthepeanut butter andbeenfine. However, thistime, within a couple ofminutes hestartedcoughing andwasthensick, butwasabsolutely fine inhimself. Thenext morning whenhegotup hehadpatches oflittleraised bumps allover, notred, justunder theskin. IfI gotothedoctor andtellhimthiswil hesend himforanallergy test ortellmetotry himagain ata later date? I know anaphylaxis gets worse witheach exposure soI don’t really want torisk himcoming intocontact again without being prepared.

  • Peanut allergy isa reaction whichoccurs soon afterexposure topeanuts orpeanut products. Itisdue toIgE allergy antibodies against peanut proteins.

Themajority ofallergic reactions topeanut aremild andconsist ofhives around themouth wherepeanut hastouched theskin, ormore generalised hives onotherpartsofthebody. Another common symptom isabdominal pain andvomiting whichoccurs soon aftereating a peanut product. More sensitive children candevelop coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing orhoarseness ofthevoice due toanallergic reaction occurring intheairway. Inthemostsevere cases collapse andloss ofconsciousness canoccur. Very rarely, very sensitive individuals havedied fromthesevere allergic reaction known asanaphylaxis.

  • Youarerightintheexposure each time gets worse whenitisa nut allergy. Mydaughter isallergic toWalnuts. Another thing isthatsomefoods areprocessed inthesame plants aspeanuts soyouhavetobecareful giving himanything theretoo. Onlygive himsafe foods thatyouabsolutely know aren’t madearound peanuts. Heneeds tobeseen byanallergist asap. Youinsist onit. Thiscouldmean yourchild’s life ifheisindeed allergic andyoudon’t getittaken care of. Youwillprobably havetocarry anepi pen ifitisa truepeanut allergy. Theywillprobably goahead andtest himforotherallergies atthesame time. Itisnota fun test, buta very crucial test forhim. I hope youfind out whatitis, butsure sounds likepeanut allergy tomewithhimgetting sick thatquick. Mydaughter isallergic tocats, mold, grass, walnuts, lactose Intolerant, allmilk products, chemicals incleaning products, tap water, andhasfood intolernaces soI understand howfrustrating thiscanbe.
