Mental illness cited inasthma link tosuicide
May2008 (Reuters Health) –Newresearch indicates thatasthma issignificantly linked tosuicidal thoughtsandsuicide attempts,butafteraccounting formental health conditions andsmoking,theassociation ismarkedly weakened.
A number ofstudies haveshown increased rates ofsuicidal ideation andsuicide attempts amongindividuals withasthma andotherrespiratory diseases. Whythisisso,however,hasbeenunclear,according tothereport intheAnnals ofAllergy,Asthma,andImmunology.
Common risk factors thatmaysoften theassociation haveoftennotbeentaken intoaccount inprior studies,note Dr. Diana E. Clarke,fromTheJohns Hopkins School ofPublic Health inBaltimore,andherassociates.
Theircurrent investigation involved ananalysis ofdata from5692 individuals drawn froma nationally representative sample ofEnglish-speaking adults.
Overall,8.7 percent ofsubjects hadsuicidal ideation without actual attempts atsomepoint intheirlives and4.2 percent ofsubjects hadideation withattempted suicide. Theprevalence ofasthma was12.0 percent.
Many ofthefactors thatcorrelated withsuicidal ideation werethesame asthose seen withasthma,including younger age,being female,current smoking,nicotine dependence,major depression,andalcohol abuse.
Asthma wassignificantly associated withsuicidal ideation withsuicide attempts butnotwithout attempts,theresearchers found. Thestrength oftheassociation,however,fell withadjustment forsmoking,nicotine dependence,age,sex,andraceandthenagain afteraccounting fordepression,panic disorder andalcohol abuse.
Nonetheless,onfinal analysis,asthma remained significantly associated withsuicidal ideation withsuicide attempts,thereport shows.
“More research isneeded tofurther elucidate themechanism oftheremaining association between asthma andsuicide attempts,”theauthors conclude. “Modification ofsmoking behaviors andeffective treatment ofdepression,anxiety,alcohol abuse,andpossibly asthma areimportantsuicide prevention strategies.”

ScienceDaily (May13,2008) — Asthma isassociated withhigher suicidal thoughtswithattempted suicide,butdoesnotseem tobelinked withsuicidal thoughtswithout attempts,according toa newreport.
Cigarette smoking andconcurrent mental health conditions mayindependently account forsignificant proportions (butnotall) oftheassociation between asthma andsuicidal thoughtswithattempts noted Diana E. Clarke,MSc,PhD,TheJohns Hopkins University School ofPublic Health,Baltimore,andcolleagues.
Thereisgrowing evidence ofrelationships between respiratory diseases andsuicidal behaviors,butinvestigators saythisisthefirst study toexamine theassociation between asthma andsuicidal thinking withandwithout attempts using a nationally representative sample ofadults. Theyalsonote itisthefirst study toinvestigate thepotential role ofcigarette useandnicotine dependence intheassociation ofasthma andsuicidal behavior.
Thestudy examined data on5,692 individuals 18 years andolder fromtheUSNational Comorbidity Survey Replication. Approximately 12 percent ofthesample hada history ofasthma. Theestimates oflifetime prevalence forsuicidal ideation without andwithattempts andasthma were8.7 percent,4.2 percent and12.0 percent,respectively,andoccurred more frequently inwomen thatmen. Despite adjustments forcigarette smoking,concurrent mental health conditions andcommon sociodemographic factors,a statistically significant association remained between asthma andsuicide thoughtsandattempts.
Investigators suggest thatasthma maybeassociated withthemore severe form ofsuicidal behavior,butnotthemilder forms ofsuicidal thoughtswithout attempts.
“Researchers havespeculated thattherelationship between asthma andsuicidal behaviors ispossibly becauseofensuing mood andanxiety thatresults fromdisability anddiscomfort associated withasthma,whichcanbea lifelong disease,” theynote. “Individuals mighthavefrequent thoughtsofdeath withincreasing severity solely becausetheyhavea potentially life-threatening illness.”
Although thiswasnota clinical study,thefindings mayindicate theneed forreferral tomental services ifanindividual hasasthma andexpresses suicidal thoughts.
